Recently, as people suffering from depression turn away from prescription medications and start looking for alternative treatments, the depression diet has become increasingly popular. There are various nutrients and foods which can have a significant effect on one’s sense of self, and science has pointed to a strong relationship between diet and depression.

The main trigger of depression is stress: physical, mental, social, etc. Most people handle everyday stress. Their bodies, minds adjust to the differing pressures. Is there anyone that is 100%, free from depression? No. Everyone gets depressed, to one degree or another. It’s normal, as one’s energy alternates between high and low.

Diet can help to treat depression. By making small changes in our diet we can easily cure the problem of depression.

By eating the right food, you can boost your brain chemicals and fight off the effects of depression. It is also important to keep blood sugar levels where they are supposed to be. Sugar levels that go too high or too low can cause brain cells to die and the chemicals to decrease production, once again allowing depression to set in.

Although it is the most common form of treatment for depression, there are many unpleasant side affects with anti-depressant medications. Some side effects last just a few weeks and some will be with a person for as long as they take the medication. The body often needs time to adjust to new medications, however, negative side affects are the most common reason that most people stop taking anti-depressant medication.

A study show that antioxidant can prevents depression, you should check your current diet and see if it is already contain enough food with antioxidant in it such as red bean, blueberry, blackberry, apple, strawberry, black plum, spinach, broccoli, asparagus, and papaya.

Omega-3 fatty acids. Apart from other health benefits from eating omega-3 rich food is that it affects neurotransmitter pathways in the brain relieving our depressive symptoms. Such foods as fatty fish (salmon, anchovies, tuna, sardines, mackerel), flaxseed, nuts and dark green vegetables should be an essential part of any healthy diet.

A balanced diet, rich in fresh fruits and vegetables will eliminate many of those toxins, particularly if the produce is organic. A good multivitamin supplement provides extra nutritional insurance.

Look for whole foods (foods of quality nutrients), such as:

fresh fruits and veggies
whole grains (wheat, rye, oats, seven grains)
dairy products (eggs, milk, butter, cream, cheese)
beans
meat
nuts
oils (flaxseed, olive, canola oil)
chicken

Many people struggle with the problem of a loss of appetite when they are depressed. If this is your difficulty, be sure to keep snacks available. Try setting them around the house or in your environment where you will be likely to grab a handful here and there throughout the day. If you are out and about, carry small baggies of snacks in your purse or bag. Choose high protein snacks as much as possible. Jerky and trail mix, or other mixed nuts, are good choices.

A key element for fighting depression is maintaining a constant energy level. If you start to drift lower in energy, you will find it even harder to get out of bed, even harder to make a conscious effort to fight off the symptoms and effects of depression.
