How to fix the forward on a John Deere 400 Backhoe?

I am quite oblivious to backhoes and so is my father, and he asked me to google to help find answers to his problem…..

He has a John Deere 400 Backhoe that was built in the late 70s or early 80s. It is a four cycle and takes diesel (if that made sense..?). The forward does NOT work, but the reverse does. Is there a way to fix the tractor so that the forward works?

The Hydraulic Fluid is full?

John Deere uses little compression pins to link shift linkage together which is guaranteed to leave you stranded, they break when you least expect it.

…I have 5300JD.regular tractor….One extra question ..How similar are the two tractors?.. One day the shift got real easy, too easy, it wouldn’t go in gear….The gear box is under the seat, so I removed the seat…Once the seat is removed, you’lll recognize the cover of the gear box, with around 10 bolts holding it…caution there’s a spring with a Ball bearing in a slot when you remove the cover..Once the covers off, the shift linkage is all above the gears..There’s two rods that slide back and forth, on the rods are the yolks that push the gears..

And in my case, the bolted bracket from the rod to the yolk ..Broke…I was able to order the part, and remove the rod, and replace the new bracket…
