what type of fabrics and thread should i buy if im making a tote bag?

my teacher said to get medium weight material, something u can use to make pants cuz they are stronger than shirt materials
so what type of fabric should i use?
and would cotton work?

A heavier cotton fabric such as denim would work. Walk around the fabric store and feel the fabrics. You will be able to tell what is a top weight (for blouses, etc.) and what is a bottom weight (for pants, jackets). Enjoy the search process and have a creative good time. Your thread should be “all purpose”. Hopefully the store personnel can guide you to the correct thread display. The thread should match the fabric. If there is not an exact match, go a smidge darker. It is ok to pull the thread loose to lay it a cross the fabric to check color, but please be courteous and rewind any spool you do not buy. Welcome to the world of sewing!!!
