How big should a baby/diaper/nappy bag be?

I am 5 weeks off ETA and am looking at getting a baby bag. I am worried in particular about what size to get.

I use a small to medium sized backpack. The benefit of a backpack is it doesn’t fall off while you are carrying baby and can be used while using a baby carrier.

The first months the only thing I have in it is a change pad that has a pocket for diapers and one for wipes. It rolls up and has velcro closures. I toss my wallet and keys in it and usually a light baby blanket/burp cloth. Sometimes a spare outfit -but you know if you need it or not. In winter of course I bring some extra layers just in case.

After the first months I add some toys.

After 6 months more toys, a whole extra outfit, finger foods (cheerios, fruit, etc) and a sippy cup or water bottle.

A pen and small notebook are always useful. A camera can be nice too I also carry a small first aid kit on and off.

I am totally not the kind of person to ever take diaper cream unless my son has a rash, no medication either (except for me sometimes I keep tylenol and tampons). If I am out somewhere and I have a sudden need for diaper cream, tylenol, orajel, or whatever on earth I don’t have I will simply go to a store and buy it. I use medication so rarely as it is that half the time I go to use it I have to toss it because its expired and go buy more anyway.
